Program Description

“Spanish: Semester communication and culture courses.”

The University of Alicante offers semester coures in Spanish and English for overseas students.

Spanish courses aimed at students who want to improve their communicative proficiency and their cultural knowledge of Spain, and English courses for those who have not yet reached the level of proficiency in Spanish required to take a course in Spanish.

In addition, these can be combined with intensive Spanish language courses and semester language courses.

There are 4 hours a week of class (two 2-hour classes).

Courses last for a total of 60 hours. Each course is equivalent to 6 ECTS credits.

Activities – free and paid exra-curricular and cultural activities are offered.

Airport pickup is available.

Housing placement is available.

Program Cost

Tution – € 400 / $ 492.36 * per course

The cost of a month long Spanish course at the University of Alicante is  € 727/mo. You can add addtional Spanish classes to your program for a reasonable fee.

Housing – € 230 / $ 283.11 * mo.

If you opt for a single room in a shared student apartment, the cost is approximately € 230/mo.

A homestay with a Spanish family will cost € 660/mo. (half board).

Program Structure

While these courses can be taken individually, it is an excellent idea to combine them with the intensive Spanish language program offered by the University of Alicante.

“Professional communication skills in an intercultural context”

This course is aimed at overseas students who have not yet reached the level of proficiency in Spanish required to take a course in professional communication and intercultural strategies taught in Spanish, and its fundamental goal is to improve their understanding of intercultural communication in professional contexts, transmit essential strategies for understanding and acting in intercultural contexts and develop their mediation strategies. Course taught in English.

“Spanish cultures from an intercultural perspective”

This course is aimed at overseas students who have not yet reached the level of proficiency in Spanish required to take a course taught in Spanish, and its fundamental goal is to improve their knowledge of diverse aspects of contemporary Spain, which will help them to understand the complex socio-political and cultural context of “the many Spains” of today, as well as the character of the peoples who inhabit them. Course taught in English.

“Gender, language and power”

This course is aimed at overseas students interested in analysing gender relations in society and discussing the media’s approach to this issue, as well as studying the socio-cultural consequences that such an approach entails. The goal is to endow students with the analytical tools necessary to develop critical thought and reflect on the construction of masculinity and femininity in contemporary media. Minimum level of Spanish required: B1.

“Speaking skills through drama”

This course is aimed at enhancing overseas students’ communicative proficiency through drama and acting techniques, with the goal of promoting comprehensive, liberating and integrated expression combining linguistic and non-linguistic mechanisms. Class activities and tasks are combined with other pursuits beyond the classroom such as reading plays and watching them on the screen and at the theatre. Minimum level of Spanish required: B1

“Business Spanish”

This course is aimed at overseas students who want to develop their skills in an area that does not normally form part of language learning. Students will be familiarised with terminology related to economics, business administration, markets and associated topics, thus enabling them to communicate correctly in the target language. Minimum level of Spanish required: A2.

“Creative Writing”

The goal of this course is to enhance students’ communicative proficiency through various creative writing tasks and discussion and commentary on literary texts. It is aimed at overseas students seeking to improve their spoken and written expression, develop their creativity and learn about some of the most important authors in contemporary Spanish and Hispano-American literature. Minimum level of Spanish required: B1.

Students participating in this program can live in a shared student apartment, a homestay, or a student residence.

There is no minimum required GPA. Recommendation letters are not required. The minimum age for enrollment is 16.
